SODC Swimming Campaign for residents age 60 plus

£5 swim offer for residents age 60 plus

If you are age 60 and over and resident in Shiplake or any of the neighbouring villages, then make use of this great Spring swim offer to try out a leisure pool near you.

Most residents living in South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse can reach a pool within about 20 minute drive time, but taking that first step to try out swimming can be hard. To make it easier, GO Active Gold, in partnership with Better Leisure Centres, are offering unlimited swimming for £5 during April 2017 to residents age 60 plus living in rural villages.

GO Active Gold is a Sport England funded project, encouraging people living in rural areas age 60 and over to become more active by setting up activities local to them.

Research shows that as you get older, you’re far more likely to become inactive: 42 per cent of people aged 55 and over are inactive compared to 29 per cent of the population as a whole.

Swimming is an ideal workout for the elderly, mainly because it presents little risk of injury and is low impact. Swimming also develops strong and stable core muscles, which are necessary for good balance control — a major protective factor against falls.

Make sure you don’t miss out on this offer by registering your place before Saturday 1 April 2017, just call 01235 422226 or complete the online registration form on the GoActive website: www.getoxfordshireactive.org/go-active-gold.

Once you have registered, visit your local leisure pool during April.  Your one month swim offer will start from the date of your first swim.

South Oxfordshire District - Participating pools include

  • Thame Leisure Centre
  • Henley Leisure Centre
  • Abbey Sports Centre
  • Didcot Wave

Table tennis sessions for 2017 will start on Wednesday 18th January at 11.15am in the Memorial Hall. We now have two brand new tables and assciated equipment courtesy of Table Tennis England. At next Wednesday's meeting the formation of a regular club will be discussed so please come along if interested.

Walking Football is taking a winter break. We have 6 enthusiatic members but need at least another two more to make continuation viable. If you are interested but haven't yet come along please let us know by e-mail to go-active@shiplakevillages.com. Hopefully we can get enough support to get going again in Feb or March. Remember - no prior footballing experience is necessary and the activity is for both men and women.

More Walking Footballers (and others) required!

The GoActive project has now spawned three ongoing activities in Shiplake but only one of these - Table Tennis - appears to have sufficient support to be long term viable. The Tai Chi class hovers just under break-even numbers and the new Walking Football class has had surprisingly little support, given its popularity elsewhere.

If you are interested in any of these activities please come along and give them a try:

  • Walking Football - every Monday 10-11 Memorial Hall field, Cost £3
  • Table Tennis - every Wednesday 11.15-12.30 Memorial Hall, Cost £3
  • Tai Chi - every Thursday 11.30-12.30 Memorial Hall, Cost £4

If these activities are not for you but you are interested in something else please let us know at goactive@shiplakevillages.com

Finally, please note that although while these classes are supported by GoActive they are targetted at persons of 60 years or older this doesn't apply once they become viable in their own right. If you are not yet 60 but interested in any of the activities please come along anyway or e-mail us to let us know of your interest.
